Fortress SMS/SMS-M are phone-based applications that send and read encrypted SMS text messages, for Series 60 and UIQ handsets. Fortress SMS-M ("multimedia") can also encrypt attachments, including audio, images and video. The messages are encrypted prior to transmission and can only be read by the intended recipient on entry of the correct password.

Fortress protects against message interception in transit, as well as casual snooping by providers and unauthorized entities. It's also service provider-independent. The system also supports long (concatenated) messages and Unicode character sets.

Messages can be sent phone-to-phone, or from a complimentary Windows base station application, Fortress SMS Secure center, which allows the sending of encrypted SMS and Multimedia messages to multiple recipients using Fortress SMS/SMS-M.

Encryption Algorithm: Rijndael (128 bit key, 128 bit block) with cipher block chaining (Advanced Encryption Standard Rijndael (128 bit key, 128 bit block) with cipher block chaining (Advanced Encryption Standard-compliant).
